Tree: A New Vision of the American Forest (by James Balog)

A book from my ever-growing collection that brings me joy, especially in the summer months, is Tree: A New Vision of the American Forest by James Balog. This book is not only informative about various tree species, it’s a work of art. Balog is a neo-naturalist with a unique way of photographing his subjects. This book contains beautiful photos of trees in their natural element, sometimes capturing the surrounding environment from the tree’s perspective and sometimes using a huge white cloth as a backdrop. Balog also shares a brief story of his experience photographing the trees.

Balog traveled the United States photographing a variety of trees: redwoods, oaks, poplars, aspens, pines, sycamores, and cottonwoods to name a few. As a true tree hugger, I love having this book in my collection where I can casually browse these gorgeous images.

My husband and I picked up this soft cover book ages ago during one of our many random bookstore visits. I don’t recall exactly when or what state we were in at the time, but it continues to hold a special place in my library.
