The Complete Language of Flowers (by Shelia Pickles)
I love experiencing all four seasons Mother Nature has to offer. I am especially fond of spring through fall for the gorgeous flowers I plant and the amazing wildflowers I get to admire as the seasons progress. The Complete Language of Flowers: A Treasury of Verse and Prose by Shelia Pickles combines my love for flowers and book collecting. This is a beautiful and informative book on various flower species. Each flower described is illustrated with art, poetry, and a description of the flower’s usefulness.
There is a Victorian flare to this book with the paintings of famous and lesser-known artists: Millais, Burne-Jones, Watts, Tissot, and Alma-Tadema.
Poetry from several well-known poets offers the reader a sense of elegance to accompany each flower: Shakespeare, Elizabeth Browning, Keats, and Coleridge.
I have my mom to thank for the presence of this book in my growing collection. She was quite instrumental in the very early stages of my dream to have a home library when I grew up. Many of the cherished, older books in my library are here because of her. 💜
The Complete Language of Flowers is an older book. My copy appears to have been published in 1998. Below is a link for a used copy through Amazon, as a reference. My intention is to simply share my appreciation for this book and the place it holds in my library. There is a fourth gift volume available from Amazon here.
