The Roommate (by Dervla McTiernan)
I’m quickly becoming a fan of Dervla McTiernan. The Roommate is the second novella I’ve read that is a prequel to her Cormac Reilly series. I’ve also read the first book in the series, The Ruin. Her books are mysterious and suspenseful.
Set in Ireland, Niamh is a young woman employed as a teacher living with a roommate. She wakes up early one morning, assuming her roommate is still asleep, when the police, Cormac Reilly, knocks on her door. Curious as to why her roommate didn’t rouse with the knocking, Niamh realizes her roommate is missing. As the investigation into her missing roommate evolves, Niamh’s life becomes increasingly chaotic and confusing.
This short, thrilling mystery kept me engaged. Told from the perspective of Niamh, Cormac Reilly kept appearing in the story as the lead investigator. I never knew when he was going to pop up. I liked all the characters and how the story evolved. Just when I wasn’t sure where the story was going to lead me, it quickly took me in an unexpected direction. It was frightening and intriguing.
I picked up the audiobook format of The Roommate with my Audible subscription. Aoife McMahon is an excellent narrator.
