Silas House
It was a standing room only event to celebrate the book launch of Silas House’s new novel, Lark Ascending, at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Lexington, Kentucky. Silas arrived looking quite dapper in his blazer and tie with his beloved dog, Ari, at his side. Silas opened by thanking people who were instrumental in the writing of this book. It was so touching when he talked about how the dog in the story, Shamus, was based on Ari. It’s obvious that Silas has a tremendous love for animals, and it’s adorable how Ari is treated like one of his kids. I am the exact same way with my Nikolette, so I love finding that connection with others.
Silas read for us several times; from articles he wrote and sections of Lark Ascending. He shared with us how the story idea was born from his grief following the unexpected loss of his aunt. Silas was scheduled to go to Ireland the day after his aunt’s funeral, and his plans could not be rescheduled at the last minute. While processing his grief and working in Ireland, Lark’s story was born. Listening to Silas talk about his work and the dedication he has to writing, one can tell this is a very personal story. Well actually, I think all of Silas’ stories are very intimate pieces of work.
Silas shared about his strong connection with music. He creates Spotify playlists for all of his books. I love that he enjoys sharing the music he loves with his readers. Singer, Tiffany Williams, performed two songs at the event. Her voice is beautifully soft and sweet. Her guitar accompaniment was very talented.
The evening wrapped up with Silas graciously signing books. He treats everyone with kindness and is generous with his time. I observed him asking people questions and taking pictures. He genuinely cares about his readers and wants to engage with people.
Joseph-Beth Booksellers did a great job hosting the event. It’s an amazing bookstore and I feel so lucky to be a patron of this independent bookstore.
